A standalone ECU gives your engine an incredible amount of control — but only when it is configured and tuned correctly.

We provide professional remote tuning for Haltech Elite and Nexus engine management systems on naturally aspirated, turbocharged, supercharged, flex-fuel, street, race, and engine-swap applications.

Whether you’re trying to get a fresh build running for the first time or you’re tired of fighting problems with an existing tune, we work through the vehicle systematically instead of simply sending you another generic basemap.

More Than Just a Basemap

One of the biggest problems we see with standalone ECU installations is that customers are given a startup map and essentially told:

“It should run.”

But getting the engine to start is only the beginning.

Poor cold starts, unstable idle, throttle problems, lean spots, rich cruising, boost-control issues, incorrect sensor calibrations, sync problems and inconsistent drivability can all exist even though the engine technically runs.

Worse, sometimes the problem isn’t actually in the tune.

It may be a wiring problem, fuel-pressure problem, boost leak, incorrect sensor calibration, mechanical issue or an incorrectly configured ECU input/output.

That’s why our remote tuning process is based around data, datalogs and verification — not guessing.

Our Haltech Remote Tuning Process

1. Vehicle & Engine Setup Review

Before making power, we need to understand exactly what we’re tuning.

We’ll collect information about your:

  • Engine and displacement
  • Compression ratio
  • Camshaft / valvetrain
  • Fuel injectors
  • Fuel type
  • Base fuel pressure
  • Ignition coils
  • MAP sensor
  • Throttle configuration
  • Naturally aspirated / turbo / supercharger setup
  • Turbocharger and wastegate
  • Boost-control solenoid
  • Flex-fuel sensor
  • Wideband
  • Additional pressure and temperature sensors
  • Transmission
  • Intended use and horsepower goals

Your calibration should be built around your actual combination, not another car that happens to use the same engine.

2. ECU Configuration & Sensor Verification

Before aggressively tuning the engine, we verify the fundamentals.

Depending on your setup, we’ll review items such as trigger configuration, injector data, ignition configuration, sensor calibrations, MAP readings, TPS/DBW operation, fuel pressure, wideband operation, engine protection strategies and ECU inputs/outputs.

Haltech’s Elite and Nexus platforms support substantially different levels of I/O and advanced functionality depending on the ECU. Nexus S2, for example, adds an onboard wideband controller, dual DBW capability, Wi-Fi and significantly expanded onboard logging compared with older Elite hardware. (Haltech)

We want the data going into the ECU to make sense before using that data to control your engine.

3. Startup, Idle & Warm-Up

A powerful car that barely starts or constantly stalls isn’t properly finished.

We work through:

  • Startup fueling
  • Cranking
  • After-start enrichment
  • Cold start
  • Warm-up
  • Idle control
  • Ignition control
  • Throttle response
  • Hot restart

The goal is to make the vehicle behave like a properly sorted car — not something you have to fight every time you turn the key.

4. Part-Throttle & Street Drivability

This is where many performance tunes fall short.

Your engine spends far more time cruising and transitioning through different loads than it does at wide-open throttle.

Using your datalogs, we’ll work through fuel and ignition behavior during normal driving, acceleration and load transitions.

We want smooth throttle response, predictable fueling and clean drivability before concentrating on maximum power.

5. Boost Control & Power Tuning

Once the foundation is correct, we can begin safely increasing load.

For boosted combinations we’ll analyze:

  • AFR / Lambda
  • Ignition timing
  • Boost pressure
  • Wastegate behavior
  • Boost-control duty
  • RPM
  • Throttle position
  • Fuel pressure
  • Injector duty cycle
  • Intake-air temperature
  • Coolant temperature
  • Knock data when properly configured
  • Other available engine-protection channels

Instead of blindly adding boost-controller duty because the vehicle isn’t reaching target boost, we’ll use the data to determine why the engine isn’t responding as expected.

A boost leak, wastegate problem, fuel-pressure issue or mechanical limitation cannot be fixed by simply typing larger numbers into the ECU.

6. Datalog → Review → Revision → Verify

Remote tuning is an iterative process.

You datalog the vehicle → We analyze the data → We make the appropriate changes → You test again.

Each revision gives us more information about how your specific engine responds.

We continue working through the calibration systematically rather than making large blind changes and hoping the engine responds.

⸻

Stop Chasing Problems With the Tune

One of the most frustrating situations for customers is having multiple people work on a car while everyone blames someone else.

The mechanic says:

“It’s the tune.”

The tuner says:

“It’s mechanical.”

Meanwhile, you’re stuck with a car that still doesn’t run correctly.

Our approach is different.

When the datalog indicates something isn’t responding the way it should, we investigate the data before simply tuning around the problem.

For example:

You command additional boost and boost pressure barely changes.

That doesn’t automatically mean the boost table needs more duty cycle.

There may be a boost leak, wastegate configuration issue, solenoid plumbing problem, exhaust restriction or turbocharger limitation.

The same principle applies to fuel pressure, throttle control, synchronization, sensors and other systems.

A calibration should not be used to hide a mechanical problem.

Large Injectors • E85 • Flex Fuel • Big Turbo Setups • Aftermarket Camshafts • Built Engines • High Boost • Boost Control • Engine Swaps • Additional Sensors • Fuel Pressure Monitoring • Oil Pressure Protection • Race Applications

The more modified the vehicle becomes, the more important it becomes to have a calibration built around the actual combination and actual data.

⸻

Engine Protection Matters

Making horsepower is only part of the job.

Where the ECU and vehicle configuration allow it, we can incorporate strategies around important parameters such as:

Fuel Pressure • Oil Pressure • Coolant Temperature • Intake Air Temperature • Boost Pressure • Lambda / AFR

Modern Nexus ECUs provide extensive logging and multi-level engine-protection capabilities, giving us significantly more information to work with when the appropriate sensors are installed and configured. (Haltech)

The ECU can only protect against conditions it can actually measure, so available protection strategies depend on your ECU, sensors and wiring.
